Thesis completed, this summer, the goal was to present some of the findings at larger international academic gatherings.
One was a virtual presence at the IATIS 5th International Conference in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. As part of the Panel "Repackaging books for a new audience: innovative approaches to research on cross-cultural literary flows" my presentation looked at the covers of translated books as framing and representation sites that contest or promote stereotypes in the global literary market.
The second was real life presence at the the ICCEES (International Council for Central and Eastern European Studies) 9th World Congress taking place in Makuhari, Japan.
The Panel on Literary Approaches to the Balkan's was small, but was followed by a lively discussion. Apart from talking about covers, here I had a bit more time to present more aspects of national representation in the paratext of a translated book for children.
One of the comments from the audience proved the importance of children's books by saying that the reason for deciding to study the Balkans was reading Zlata's Diary when she was a teenager.
It is always great to see familiar faces at this two big meetings of scholars, but also create new friendships, which will hopefully continue at some next conference, workshop or joint project.
